Sabra lives on a remote Sea Island with 17 chickens, 1
dog, uncountable cats, 12 geese and other living things. She
has a large and private expanse of land that looks out over
marshes and rivers that lead to the Atlantic Ocean. She
keeps a flower and vegetable garden. She's "down home" and
proud of it. Everything she loves shows up in her art ---
horses, animals, cats, crabs, fish, country people just
doing everyday things. For the first few years after she
started painting, her work was shown primarily in South
Carolina. But fourteen years ago, she was one of the
featured painters in a special exhibition of South Carolina
Folk Artists that was put together from the Spoleto
Festival. The exhibition then moved to Washington, D.C. All
of her work sold during the Spoleto Festival; more was added
to the exhibit in Washington and it, too, was sold. Most of
her paintings are done on found objects --- pieces of old
wood, scraps of lumber, pieces of tin. Often she cuts these
to create three dimensional pieces, even adding ropes and
other objects. Sabra is completely self taught and never
lacks for new ideas. In recent years her work has become so
popular that she now works on commissions.
