Born in 1931 in Jamaica, Hubert Walters was a commercial fisherman and boat builder for two decades. In 1971 Walters immigrated to the United States, settled in New York and began working as a carpenter. Only two years later Walters and his wife left the city for North Carolina where they settled in and worked in textile mills. Wanting to devote his time to making art, Walters retired from mill work, later exhibiting and selling his art at flea markets. The artist creates sculptures of boats, animals, people and other subjects, as well as clock towers. he typically creates an armature of wood, metal and found objects and covers it with bondo (a fast drying material that is used in auto body repair) and paint. His work is included in many collections including the New Orleans Museum of Art and the St. James Place Folk Art Museum. |
