Pat Von Schlegel once wrote about her work" Across and
back again, up and down, motion of my life. Educated to see
yet tormented by fear and self doubt, I call upon my angels
to help me. They always seem to be witty and whimsical
making me laugh and forget. We play together and dream up
fantasies." It was a teaching assignment with elementary
children where Pat discovered her style of painting. She had
spent some time in San Francisco and viewed the work of Joan
Brown and Roy de Forest. Their use of humor, delighted Pat.
With their humor and the children's images, she began to
evolve a statement of her own. Brightly colored angels,
polka dot animals, and biblical characters interchange to
create her compositions. You almost interact instantly to
get the feeling of the painting. An Outsider artist, Pat
suffers from a disabling manic-depressive disorder. She is
in her 60's and lives with her mother in Georgia.
