Kentucky artist Dan Torpey's works are whimsical, magical
and very creative. He creates hand crafted moveable art
pieces that will inspire your capabilities of laughter,
creativity and imagination. In 2001 Dan found paper automata
while perusing the Internet. These moveable creations
sparked his interest and he began his journey to becoming
one of a handful of artisans in the U.S. who make automata.
Dan says he enjoys every aspect of making automata from
sketching the ideas, to finding the right mechanism to make
each piece move. Once he cuts the wooden figures, it takes
him hours of experimentation to find the perfect movement in
the cams and levers. He says he feels like a proud parent
every time he successfully creates a new automata. He feels
even more satisfied and fulfilled when he sees people crank
his creations and laugh as a result.
