John Henry Toney born in 1929 and lives in Alabama. A
deeply religious man, he lives in a house trailer on the
edge of a swamp. He is a neighbor of folk artist Butch
Anthony who has encouraged him to pursue his art. John Henry
had been drawing a lot since he was very young, but when he
was working in a cotton mill he drew a picture of his boss,
and the boss didn't like it and fired him. With that
discouragement, he quit drawing until about 1994. John Henry
makes drawings and paintings in marker and paint that
feature simple images embellished with recurring outlines
and intriguing color combinations.
