Mose Tolliver was born near Montgomery Alabama sometime
between 1915 and 1920 to a family of tenant farmers and was
one of twelve children. Mose Tolliver married in the early
1940's and had a large family. He had to go to work at an
early age and received very little formal education. In the
1960's while working for a furniture manufacturer his legs
were crushed in a work related accident. Soon after the
accident, Mose taught himself to paint. He painted seated on
the edge of his bed using wall or exterior house paints
rather than artists colors. His figures are flat, only
partially representational and sometimes explicitly erotic.
He was included in the 80's groundbreaking folk art
exhibition at the Corcoran Museum on African American folk
artists and Common Ground/Uncommon Vision at the Milwaukee
Art Museum. His works are included in many permanent museum
collections including the Birmingham Museum of Art and the
National Museum of American Art Smithsonian Institution.
Mose Tolliver passed away from pneumonia on October 30,
2006
