IRENE TISON

Irene's world is a world so rich in color and tradition you can almost taste the Gullah flavor dripping from her canvas. Irene is one of thirteen children born to Richmond and Mary Bell Tison. As a child Irene remembers sitting at her mother's feet watching as she relaxed after a long day of picking cotton by setting pencil to paper. Her mother's drawing seemed to make that plain old piece of paper sing. Soon Irene began to mimic her mother and started creating her own drawing done through a child's eyes. Painting images of "plain ole folk", Gullah people doing everyday things; Irene's devine gift is collected and adored by many. As a folk artist with a strong Gullah heritage, Irene reflects in her art the everyday simplicity of life that the Gullah people lived. From Irene's work you will draw a sense of strength and the wonder of Gullah people surviving "on next to nothing" during that time period. That very same spirit of taking "next to nothing and turning it into something" laid the ground work for the Gullah experience.
