Willie Tarver decorates his yard with what he calls
"foolin's around with cement". His "foolin's around" ...
statues of blacks, cowboys, mermaids and even nursing women,
further enlivened with house paint ... were soon discovered
by museum curators in Savannah and Atlanta, GA. When Willie
learned that others considered him to be an artist, he added
small iron welded sculpture to his repertoire because it was
lighter in weight and could be transported to art fairs and
the like. Willie's wife, Mae helps him make the iron
sculptures. Tarvers large concrete sculptures are what
serious collectors are looking for ... they are unique and
imaginative vision of the people around him .... but these
pieces are hard to ship ... so his smaller pieces are
usually what is bought. He has been included in art shows
throughout the South and his work is in the permanent
collection of Museums in Savannah and Atlanta and has been
shown at the American Visionary Art Museum.
