THE TOOTHPICK KING
Born in South Carolina more than 80 years ago, Wesley was
taken to Florida at an early age by his mother. As an adult,
he started creating artwork with toothpicks. He never
thought of his creations as "art", he called them
"oddities". At first he created everyday household objects
... stoves, ice boxes, record players, musical instruments;
the things he lovingly remembered as a child. He worked as a
messenger for a television station in Florida. When
distinguished people such as Liberace or Minnie Pearl would
visit, he created pianos, Minnie's famous hat and other such
objects from toothpicks and would give them to visitors. His
first national exposure in the art world was at the American
Visionary Art Museum in its opening exhibition. A dozen
pieces of his art were featured. He continued to make
toothpick art through the end of his life although most of
the pieces were relatively basic compared to the intricate
sailing ships, trains, and automobiles that he fashioned in
his younger days.
All works made entirely from toothpicks
