Hugo Sperger was born in 1922 in Merano, Italy, to German parents who moved to the United States in 1929. After living in upstate New York, he moved to Kentucky in 1955 and settled in his wife's home place ... Salyersville, KY. He was a painter, carver and toy maker. His subject matter varied ranging from religious paintings to erotic carvings. His paintings teemed with figures: people, animals, angels, devils. He used bright colored acrylics. Hugo Sperger died in 1996. His work is just about every major museum collection that contains folk art.
