When we asked Norma how long she'd been painting, she
said "72 years". She got her first easel on her third
birthday as a gift from her parents --- both of whom were
artists. The only art training she has comes simply from
working alongside her parents. She enjoys painting
primitives of "things going on" ... village scenes, parades,
family reunions, festivals, weddings, country fairs ... all
featuring dozens of people caught up in the activities.
Although Norma does naive style paintings on canvas, a few
years ago she hit upon the idea of doing her paintings on
old fashioned schoolroom slates. These charming paintings
have become her "hallmark". She likes them because they're
very affordable. "Anyone can have art in their lives; even
young people." Norma's work is in the permanent collection
of the Hurn Museum of Folk Art.
