Rev. Johnnie Simmons came to art suddenly. Mainly he is a preacher on St. Helena's Island, SC where Sam Doyle, an internationally acclaimed folk artist lived and worked. Rev Simmons said he was at K-Mart having a tire repaired. It was going to take a lot longer than he imagined so on an impulse he went into the craft section to look around. he became fascinated with a wood burning set and bought it. He began creating story pictures about Gullah life, using the wood burning tool to etch the picture and to write a description in the Gullah language. Gullah is unique to the black people in the Sea islands where their families were brought years ago as slaves. Rev. Simmons adds paint to some of his etchings; others he leaves just as burnt wood. These are wonderful primitive creations filled with the spirit and soul of a black minister. |
