Mary has painted all her life but has never formally
studied art. She won an award in 1948 at age eight from the
Chicago Tribune, placing first in the "Mighty Joe Young"
coloring contest. They gave her a plastic tea set. All
through high school and college, if she had any spare time,
she painted. never did it occur to her that she could become
a full time artist or that your work would sell. In 1972 she
bought a small ranch house. She had so much work piled up
that she summoned the courage to try to enter an art fair.
She was astounded when she was accepted and absolutely
flabbergasted when she sold a painting at her first show. In
1986 she showed at an art fair where she won second place in
show and almost completely sold out. She has won eight
awards in total for her work and in 1992 she was juried into
a show allowing her to exhibit at the James Thompson Center
and the Illinois Museum Gallery.
