Matt Sesow was born in 1966 and grew up in Lincoln
Nebraska. When he was eight years old he was struck by a
small landing airplane while playing outside with friends
near the rural airfield across the street from his house.
The airplane's propeller struck his upper left arm, dragged
him over 150 feet and subsequently severed his arm. The
surgeons were able to reattach the arm through a series of
operations, however, blood flow to his left hand was
insufficient and the hand was amputated during one of
several surgeries. Matt was left handed before the accident;
however through the love and constant support of his parents
and siblings, he was able to lead a happy childhood. Matt is
a self-taught artist who paints everyday. He likes to use
intense colors and sharp lines to tell a moving story. He
likes the way cardboard holds oil paint and the way canvas
burns his fingers and sands his nails as he scratches its
surface. Matt enjoys the smell of linseed oil and turpentine
as they fill his studio space. Painting takes all his energy
and effort. He says it is the most important thing he does.
Matt is a very powerful artist and filmmaker. His work is in
the permanent collection of the Hurn Museum of Contemporary
Folk Art.
