O.L. Samuels was born in 1931 in Georgia and left home at
the age of eight to work as a pine raker and on Georgia
farms. He worked until in 1982 when he was crushed by a
falling tree. O.L. feel into a deep depression during this
time. The words his great great grandmother (a freed slave)
told him long ago finally pulled him out of his sadness. She
had told him that when a person would become depressed he
would carve on a spool. O.L. took her advice and picked up
some wood and started carving. Although he is colorblind he
paints his carvings. O.L. uses different colors and he said
they seem to match up. "They ask me why I use so many colors
and I say I want to be sure I get the right one". The
artist's subjects include some people, a whole menagerie of
animals (real and imagined) such as mules, alligators,
snakes, dogs, turkeys and imaginative automobiles (his
favorite form) which look as if they belong in a science
fiction movie. O.L. Also paints as well on occasion. His
works are in several permanent collections including the
Arkansas Arts Center and the National Museum of American Art
Smithsonian Institution.
