Nellie Mae Rowe, born in 1900, is one of the country's most highly regarded folk artists. She was a visionary artist who believed her art was a gift from God. Inspired by her religious visions, dreams, and daily life, she created paintings and sculpture. In 1999 there was a one-person exhibition of her work at the Museum of American Folk art in New York. Her work is included in many permanent museum collections including the High Museum, the Morris Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Museum of American Folk Art. Nellie Mae passed away in 1982.
