Sulton Rogers was born in 1922 in Mississippi and learned
carpentry skills at an early age, with the help of his
father. He started carving small animals as a child, and
attended school for a few years. In 1941 he married, went on
to have ten children, and then left the family. He traveled
a lot and then settled in Syracuse, New York, where he
worked for Allied Chemical. He took up carving again when he
needed to have something to keep him awake during night
shifts at the chemical plant. He retired in 1984. He moved
back to Mississippi in 1995. Rogers's work has been included
in shows since 1989 at the Dallas Museum of Art, New Orleans
Museum of Art and the American Visionary Art Museum. His
work is in the permanent collection of the University of
Mississippi Art Museum and the African American Museum just
to name a few. Sulton Rogers passed away on April 5,
2003.
