Cary Ragland has come a long way in the past 11 years. Age age 21, she was a junior at the University of Georgia and studying for a career in social work when her life suddenly changed. At the time, Ragland was accustomed to riding a bicycle to her classed. One day in October 1994, she was riding on her way to class when she and a bus collided in the middle of an intersection. She was not wearing a helmet. She remained in intensive care for a month and had several surgeries to relieve the pressure on her brain, and a shunt was added to stabilize her condition. In January 1995 she gradually began to regain consciousness and was placed under the care of a physical therapist. Three months later she returned home for the first time. Cary was unable to talk or communicate. She had to learn to talk all over again. Muscles in every part of her body had to be retrained. In December 1997 she had surgeries on each hip to have calcium deposits removed which were caused by the trauma she suffered during the accident. Cary began to look for ways to be herself. Her friend Vicki introduced Cary to Kacey Carneal, an artist who is now her mentor. Cary did drawings with Carneal in her studio in Virginia. Kacey introduced her to several gallery owners. Today, Cary lives with her dog in a house next door to her parents home. She goes shopping, cleans and cooks for herself. She also volunteers at the Virginia Living Museum and has a part time job at Food Lion.
