John (JB) Murry was born in 1908 near Sandersville, Georgia and died in 1988. He was a mystic who created beautiful drawings and writings filled with spiritual messages. In the 1970's JB had a religious experience that he wanted to share, and his writings and drawings were his media. He created "spirit drawings" and complex abstract paintings that served as aids to mediation and divination. He wrote in tongues, spiritual messages that only he could read by looking at his script through a bottle of holy water held over the work like a magnifying glass. Chants or prayers would often accompany his readings, which might be done with visitors present. JB believed the Lord directed his writing and drawing, which depicted both the spiritual side and evil forces. JB's art can be examined on two levels; as abstract drawing and as a written attempt to communicate an indecipherable religious message. Murry's work has become well know to museum audiences. He was included in the prestigious Corcoran Gallery of Art's Biennial Show in Washington DC in 1989.
