Louis Monza was born in Turate Italy in 1897 and came to California as a teenager. He traveled in both the United States and Mexico. A socialist and pacifist, he had no desire to fight in any war. However, he was drafted into the US Army during World War I and served in Panama. After the war he moved to New York, where he was a house painter. Monza began to devote serious time to his art in 1938, while recovering from a serious fall from a painters scaffold. He moved to Redondo Beach California where he married his wife Heidi in 1946. She worked to support them both. They traveled a lot, especially to Mexico. His subjects were varied, from landscapes to political allegories and social criticism. He made some spiritual paintings, though he disliked organized religion. Louis Monza passed away in 1984. His work is in several permanent museum collections including the Oakland Museum of California, the National Museum of American Art Smithsonian Institution, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Collection, the American Visionary Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, and the Portland Museum of Art.
