John Mitchell works in a variety of media including
sculpture, painting, and woodworking. Some of his most
fascinating work consists of constructions created to
reflect architecture that is symbolic of the African
American experience. While studying at the Savannah College
of Art and Design, he began building panels and canvases in
the shape of Shotgun Houses used as icons. These eventually
evolved into actual sculptures of shotguns. Mitchell says of
his art, "I am mainly concerned with transforming the black
experience into universally understood terms, much in the
same manner that jazz musicians have spoken to the world
with their music. My work is biographical and
autobiographical. It's Americans that cannot be denied".
John's early art education was at North Carolina Central
College where he received a Bachelor's in Fine Art. He also
studied at the famous Penland School of Arts and Crafts
before undertaking a career in teaching fine arts and crafts
in recreational services programs on military bases in this
country and abroad. For nearly 15 years he worked as the
Administrator for Recreational Services for General Electric
Government Services. He returned to Savannah, where he
reenrolled in the Masters of Fine Art Program at the
Savannah College of Art and Design, majoring in painting. He
has had numerous awards and exhibitions throughout the South
and in Germany.
