Roy Minshew was born in southern Georgia in 1950. Prior to a stint in the Air Force, he worked as a fireman, sheet metal fabricator, trucker, machinist and shoe repairman. The custom leather work involved in repairing shoes was the catalyst that gave initial shape to Roy's creative energy. in 1981, when his job at the shoe repair shop ended, he decided to pursue art as a career. he set up shop, hired employees, and began doing production carvings to ship all over the world. After two and a half years of production work, he became frustrated because he felt he was no longer doing anything creative. From 1989 on, Roy has been home in is studio creating the kinds of pieces that give shape to his philosophy of life and art. He works in wood, and also does occasional small acrylics on canvas. He carves many animals, including dogs, goats, horses and pigs, ranging in all sizes. They are done with great imagination, exaggerating physical characteristics to create a mood and emotional reaction in the observer. Roy also does carvings and paint carving combinations on religious and political themes. |
