Sam McMillan was born in Robeson County North Carolina in 1926. He used to buy and sell furniture door to door until the racial turbulence of the 1960's made it too dangerous to continue. He has made and repaired furniture, worked in tobacco warehouses, and worked as a handyman. He runs "Sam's Handcraft Shop". Sam finds all kinds of furniture and household effects and paints them with colorful backgrounds and primitive figures. He paints furniture with images, dots, lines and his name :Sam: all in bright colors. His work is included in several permanent museum collection including the St. James Place Folk Art Museum and the African American Museum.
