Central to the appreciation of Lee Lawson's paintings is
an understanding of the people who populate her canvases.
They are neither Oriental, Native American or Asiatic. They
have a universal quality, not beholden to a specific culture
but one that is emblematic of a pan cultural humanity.
Lawson's people are represented in bare, not barren
settings. They are involved in simple, everyday tasks. They
have expressions of people who are at ease with the duality
of existence - the wedding of tragedy and the creation of
love. Lee uses a limited number of elements to create
powerful and intriguing images. Even her palette is confined
to just a few colors, yet the paintings burst with a full
spectrum of color. Born in North Carolina, Lee has lived and
painted throughout the U.S. Her haunting images have been
used to illustrate book covers, DD's, calendars, greeting
cards and even fabrics. Lee's art has proven especially
popular among Hollywood collectors and she is also
represented in numerous corporate collections as well. Her
art is shown in major galleries in New York, Santa Fe, San
Francisco, Los Angeles and Tokyo.
