After years of personal torment and wandering the country
as young addicts (alcohol and drugs), Kelly and Mike (whose
work can also be found on our site) found themselves ... and
each other through the healing power of art. Visiting Howard
Finster's Paradise Gardens had a profound impact on them.
Howard was their religious and creative mentor. Their visits
to Howard's turned them around completely. They have become
very religious and spiritual people. They live happily in
the backwoods of Kentucky creating art every day and living
a simple life. Their creations are filled with humor and
often include provocative messages and commentary. They
share their joy of art by conducting free art workshops for
children, both at Paradise Gardens and at other events.
Howard Finster taught them that spreading love and doing the
work of God is more important than art technique. He set
them free; they have become true messengers. They are very
creative and innovative folk artists who work with found
objects, pieces of scrap wood and house paints to construct
their art. Their work is very affordable at this point as
they emerge as two of the most interesting new artists in
the South.
