Linda Laird Sandford lives in Alabama and grew up in the
South. She is part of a female folk art family that includes
her sisters and mother. Her parents were both from poor
rural families who believed that a person could overcome
much adversity in life through hard work and faith in God.
They instilled in Linda a sense of independence and a belief
that anything is possible. Linda has always been interested
in drawing and painting. She enjoys painting and her style
reflects her orderly approach to life. A year ago she began
carving wood. From the time she was a little girl, Linda has
liked different types of wood and their grains. She decided
to try to teach herself to work with wood. She collects
fallen branches and trees from the woods for her carvings.
Some of her woodcarvings incorporate the natural shape of
the wood, and some are more stylized. While there are a
number of women woodcarvers, Linda is one of the few
self-taught female "folk" woodcarvers in the U.S. Linda's
work is in the Mennello Museum of American Folk Art and the
Fayette Art Museum collections.
