Leonard Jones was born around 1950 to a poor black family
and lives near the banks of the Savannah River in Lincoln
County, GA. . He often built his own toys and discovered his
talent for painting while attending public school. He
graduated from high school and started painting full time in
1995 after many jobs as a general laborer. . His subjects
are captured on recycled roofing tin and wood using oil
based enamel, making this art just as at home indoors as
out. The truly unique aspect of Leonard's work is that the
painting is applied with sticks or his fingers. If you look
closely, you can find Leonard's finger prints in some of his
art. Leonard paints from memory, with many of his favorite
subjects coming from childhood events. He is truly a
primitive outsider artist, choosing to still live with no
electricity, telephone, or running water. Leonard also does
not drive. In Leonard's own words "I like to let my
paintings take me to places". His work is in the permanent
collection of the House of Blues.
