James Harold Jennings was born in Pinnacle, North
Carolina in 1931. He lived with his mother until she died in
1974 and from there moved into a school bus on the property.
His mother was a schoolteacher, and tutored him from the
fifth grade on. This well known North Carolina artist made
wooden constructions that offer a great variety of figures
and groupings. He made Indian figures, Elvis with guitar,
angels decorated with symbols which reflect his religious
belief, birdhouses, tough women beating up on men and or the
devil, and some very large pieces such as windmills and
Ferris wheels. James's artworks are very brightly colored
and patterned. He has appeared in numerous exhibitions and
his work is illustrated frequently. His work is in many
museum collections including the Birmingham Museum of Art
and the Morris Museum of Art. He used to welcome visitors to
his home but in his last years found it difficult and
upsetting. Concern about his ill health and other matters
led to his death by suicide in April 1999.
