Louisiana's most famous folk artist, Clementine Hunter did not start painting until she was 57 years old. She then produced thousands of paintings. She was born on Hidden Hill Plantation near Cloutierville, in north Louisiana in 1886. At the age of fifteen she moved to Melrose Plantation and stayed the till her death in 1987. She started working as a field hand and later was promoted to working in the house. Before painting, she demonstrated her artistic abilities in many ways. She made clothing and dolls for her children, wove baskets and made intricate quilts. The owner of Melrose Plantation, Cammie Henry, invited artists and writers to stay there when they were working. Clementine found some discarded paint, painted on old window shades, and never stopped. Painting became an obsession with her. She painted on any surface she could find. Her themes were plantation workers in fields, recreation scenes, religious scenes, and painted flowers. She also did a few abstract paintings. There are numbers written works about here.
