SYLVANUS HUDSON

Sylvanus was born in Athens Georgia in 1911. Through clever use of an unusual collage technique, Sylvanus Hudson takes what would otherwise be trite sayings or familiar religious passages and gives them new life and meaning. Hudson's message collages are made of unusual materials; he takes broken glass, shells, pebbles, old watches, and other found objects and glues them to wooden panels covered with black velvet. Sylvanus's output increased in the early 80's after his retirement and the death of his wife. He gave away his message collages to friends until about 1985, when he began selling his art. One of Hudson's message collages was used as a record cover for the Human Rights album "Our Faith".
