The Gullah Images Print Portfolio

Jonathan Green was born and raised in the Low Country of South Carolina. His images of the everyday life of Gullah people have brought him national and international acclaim as an artist. In writing about his art, Pat Conroy said, "When Jonathan Green came into the world, he brought with him an inescapable sign of his specialness." He was born wearing a caul, an inner fetal membrane that covered his head at birth. In the Gullah society along the South Carolina coast, it insured that the child is touched by an uncommonness and magic that will bring inordinate grace to the community. From the beginning, Jonathan Green was marked and grew up known as "the child of the veil". Raised by his grandmother, Green's narrative depiction of everyday life stresses the human values of work, love and belonging. He has gained his proficiency as an artist through extensive study and years of creative contributions. He earned his Bachelors degree in fine arts from the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout the U.S., in the West Indies, and in Europe. He has traveled widely and pursued independent studies in Europe, the U.S. and Mexico. Meetings with artists such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and Dorothy McCay gave Green a profound desire to express his rich heritage through visual depiction. Honored with a Doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina, Green spends a great deal of time in South Carolina even though he maintains his studio in Florida. Green's art has been used for book illustrations, calendars and greeting cards.
