Lee Godie was a well known street artist in Chicago. Born
Emily Godee, on September 12, 1908, in Chicago, Lee Godie
lived the anonymous life of a bag lady before she began
selling her self-styled "French Impressionist" drawings on
the steps of the Chicago Art Institute in 1968. She became a
frequently collected artist but continued to live on the
street. In 1989 her daughter located her, after a long
search, and Lee went to live with her. "Artist Lee Godie: A
Twenty-Y ear Retrospective", curated by Michael Bonesteel,
was presented at the Chicago Cultural Center, March 13, 1993
to January 16, 1994. Her works are in the permanent
collections of many, many museums including Arkansas Arts
Center and the National Museum of American Art; Smithsonian
Institution. Lee died in 1995.
