Marilyn Foster, a new upcoming American Contemporary Folk
Artist, just started her adventure into the art world,
combining several different materials and textures to create
an exciting, colorful narration of modern black life on both
wood, wall hangings and furniture. She began her quest as a
result of her ailing husband, Randolph Foster III, whom
later dies of Hodgkin's disease in 1999. To help her
emotional and mental state after resigning from her job to
care for her husband, she delved into the world of art by
scoring wood pieces from her garage. later, she would go to
lumber yards for scrap wood. Marilyn works with many bright
colors, textures and materials, such as cement, sand,
cloths, jewels, paper and adds other wood pieces to protrude
from her paintings to create a dimensional effect and an
exciting depiction of every day life. Emphasis is made on
the teeth, mouths, hips, and buttocks of her subjects. She
is currently working on a series called "Ned and Wanda",
which is about a funny contemporary couple. All of her wood
paintings are whimsical, humorous every day experiences.
