Howard Finster was born in Valley Head, Alabama in 1916.
The founding father, pastor, and builder of "The World's
Folk Art Church", he began to produce articulate and often
apocalyptic sermons in paint in reply to a direction from
the Lord. His paintings are eclectic, delivering a deep
rooted and distinctive interpretation of the Bible. He
finished (according to his unique numbering system) more
than 40,000 works of art before his death. Howard Finster
not only created a religious visionary tradition in northern
Georgia, he also founded an artistic dynasty. He and his
wife, Pauline, have five descendants who are artists: two
children, Roy and Beverly, and three grandchildren, Allen
Wilson, Michael Finster, and Chuckie Cox, all born in
Georgia. Howard Finster, folk art's first "superstar" has
been praised by the art world and also became a TV
personality. Lehigh University which has exhibited the work
of Finster and his family on different occasions has
collected works by Howard Finster as well as by other
Finsters. He was one of the artists chosen to represent the
United States in the Venice Biennial in Italy.
