Sam Doyle was born on St. Helena Island, South Carolina
in 1906 and attended Penn School, the first school for freed
slaves. He lived in an area with a long and sustained
African and African-American history and culture. He is one
of America's most famous African American folk artists. His
paintings depict people from his island including both
legendary and local characters. His work was first shown in
the groundbreaking Corcoran Art Gallery exhibit in 1983 ...
and his art is highly sought after. The High Museum did a
one-man exhibit in 2000. Doyle painted on tin and window
shades; also created root sculptures.
