Rutherford "Tubby" Brown was born in Jefferson Georgia in
1929 and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950.
He served in the army during the Korean war and was
stationed in Hawaii. Upon his return to Georgia, he and his
brother ran a grocery business for 35 years. Tubby said that
he dreamed at night what he would make. He created
assemblages and other works of painted wood and tin. His
work is simple, colorful and fanciful, and often based on
the Bible. Betty Brown, his wife, contributed to the
painting of his assemblages. Tubby passed away in July 2003.
His work is in the permanent collection of the St. James
Place Folk Art Museum.
