California artist Ellyn "Berkeley" Boone was born in the
Bay area and spent much of her childhood in the mountains,
where her parents built a hand hewn log cabin in a remote
region of the central Sierras. Time spent there provided her
with a creative playground to nurture her daydreams and
runaway imagination. Boone studied photograph at a small
California college early in her career. But her attention
shifted from her award winning photography to assemblage,
papier mache and mixed media paintings, as her interest in
environmental concerns and contemporary social issues
increased. Combining a passion for nature with found objects
and a lyrical use of color, Boone creates mystical paintings
as well as whimsical sculptures of dogs and birds. Boone's
exploration of everyday issues is both spontaneous and
serenely elegant. A self taught artist with an obvious
disregard for artistic customs, her work has been described
as "outsider", "abstract" and contemporary folk art. Boone's
work may be found in select galleries throughout the nation
and in many prominent collections. She divides her time
between her Sonoma County home and her cabin the in the
mountains ... sharing her studio with her Border Collies,
Lucy and Tuck.
