Ree Brown is a well-educated man born in 1926 who spent
more than 40 years of his life working as an accountant for
a major oil company. The idea of making art or creating
anything never crossed his mind until after he retired. Late
in life, he befriended a well known professional painter.
They became pals and would "hit the road" together,
wandering throughout the Northwest often making ends meet by
selling stuff at flea markets that they had scrounged in
their travels. Ree's artist friend encouraged him to paint
just for the joy of it and that's when he started crating
his simple, childlike paintings of cats, birds, and people.
His artist friend showed some of his work to gallery owners
and museums who began including his art in exhibitions
throughout the west coast. Soon Ree's alluring paintings
were being sought after by collectors and his reputation has
spread to the east coast. His artist friend has since died,
but Ree continues to paint although he misses "going on the
road".
