Carl Block was born in Dallas, Texas in 1959 and is a schoolteacher. He is also an artist and a musician. He makes face jugs with "faces that appear in his mind", influenced by people he encounters. He is aware of the Southern folk pottery tradition. Beginning with earthenware clay, Carl throws the jug on a wheel, then hand-forms the various features. The faces are painted then covered with a lead-free glaze from his own formula. He fires the jugs in his backyard kiln.
