Minnie Black came from Laurel County, Kentucky. She was born in 1899. She created wonderful objects, mostly fantasy animals and other creatures from the gourds she grew on her property. She often encouraged the gourds to grow in a certain way, to be useful for the objects she made from the. She displayed these objects in her Gourd Museum next door to her house. She had hoped that the museum would remain after her death, but it was sold, and the collection too. Minnie also made musical instruments using her gourds and formed a band of senior citizens. She is often written about and her work may be seen in many museums. The Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead presented an exhibition of her work "Oh My Gourd" in 1994.
