Jack Beverland
Born in 1939 in Idaho, Jack moved to Florida with his
mother after his father died when he was 8 years old. They
had little money to live on. When Jack became old enough to
work, he started with one of America's largest chain stores
and gradually worked his way into upper management. But in
1987, he had a car accident that caused a serious head
injury. Soon after, his longtime job of 32 years was
eliminated and he found himself unemployed. His medical
problems were helped with medication --- and although the
injury will probably be a lifelong disability --- that led
him to an art therapy program and a new career of painting.
His early paintings were filled with hostility, anger and
frustration. Even the names he chose reflected his anger:
Money Talks, Life's a Bitch, Mid-life Crisis and Alone. His
people rarely had faces. But gradually his style of
paintings began to change. As he went back to a simpler
life, his paintings began reflecting much happier scenes.
His techniques and choice of paint on wood makes his style
fairly unique and easy to recognize. He frequently uses
"glow in the dark" paints so they can even be seen at night
in a darkened room. Jack's art has been featured in 40
exhibitions since 1995 with four of them being one-person
shows. He has received extensive attention in programs
conducted by The Very Special Arts Gallery since his art
career began in a therapeutic art setting.
