Michael Banks was raised by his single mother in a housing project in north Alabama. As a boy Michael loved to draw and paint from whatever materials he could find and whatever medium he attempted it always turned into something. His mother saw this and encouraged him often. He continued to draw until 1992 when his mother passed away. In his grief his passion for art faded. He fell into a deep depression and stopped painting altogether. For five years Michael's life took many difficult turns as he struggled with the depression. Finally in 1997, he recalled the encouragement that his mother had given him and began to paint and create once again. He began to heal through his obsession to create. Today Michael continues to paint full time and being a family man with his wife and son. He still likes to experiment combining both found objects as well as artists materials in each work. Painting is his life.
